Permanent, Full time – 35 hours, 5 days a week
Salary: $111,867 - $122,577, + Car Allowance + Super
Location: Rose Street, Liverpool

JOB DESCRIPTION
We are seeking an experienced and proactive Senior Environmental Investigations Officer to join our team and play a key role in protecting and enhancing the local environment through compliance, investigation, enforcement, and education initiatives.

In this role, you will lead and undertake complex environmental investigations relating to matters such as illegal tree removal, landfilling, pollution, contamination, and other unauthorised activities. You will work closely with internal and external stakeholders to ensure compliance with environmental legislation and best practice standards.

Key responsibilities include:

• Investigating environmental compliance matters and undertaking enforcement action where required
• Leading significant investigations into environmental harm and coordinating covert surveillance activities
• Preparing briefs of evidence, managing prosecution matters, and presenting evidence in Court
• Conducting site inspections and supervising contaminated land remediation projects
• Reviewing environmental and planning reports associated with development applications and post-approval compliance
• Issuing Notices, Orders, fines, and other regulatory actions in accordance with legislation
• Developing and implementing environmental compliance initiatives, programs, policies, and procedures
• Providing specialist advice and technical guidance to Council staff, contractors, and the community
• Collaborating with regional stakeholders and participating in industry forums and advisory committees
• Assisting with community education initiatives relating to environmental compliance and protection
• Managing contractors and consultants engaged to support environmental projects and investigations
• This position requires strong investigative capability, sound judgement, and the ability to manage sensitive and complex matters professionally and effectively.

ABOUT YOU
You are a highly experienced environmental compliance professional with a strong understanding of environmental legislation, investigation processes, and enforcement practices. You are confident managing complex investigations, engaging with stakeholders, and representing matters in Court where required.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

• Degree qualifications in Environmental Management, Environmental Science, or a related discipline, and/or equivalent industry experience
• A current NSW Class C Driver’s Licence
• Extensive experience in environmental compliance, investigations, and enforcement action within a regulatory environment
• Experience preparing prosecution matters and presenting evidence in Court
• Strong knowledge of relevant environmental legislation, including: Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997, Environmental Planning and Assessment Act 1979, Local Government Act 1993, Contaminated Land Management Act 1997, Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016, Biosecurity Act 2015
• Experience conducting construction site inspections and supervising contractors
• Strong research, analytical, and problem-solving skills with the ability to use data to inform solutions and programs
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including report writing and stakeholder engagement
• Well-developed negotiation and consultation skills, with the ability to navigate complex issues and competing prioritiesKnowledge of natural resource management and environmental ethics

The salary (within the above-mentioned range) will be dependent upon the relevant skills, experience, and competencies of the successful applicant.
